Healthcare Performance Solutions Success Profiles
Larry McEvoy, MD, FACPE

Principal

Larry McEvoy, MD, FACPE Larry McEvoy brings a diverse background and a unique perspective to his work as a physician principal with HPS.  Significantly impacted by both his upbringing in the rural West and his years as an emergency physician, he focuses on the development of relationships and systems that drive performance and sustainability in the workplace.  His commitment is to help HPS clients create organizations that are contributive, productive, resilient, and reliable, places of work which are both responsive to and arising from the people--both patients and healthcare workers--who create them.

Shaped in patience and an appreciation for the big picture by years on a vast landscape (a complex, adaptive system which serves as a metaphor for healthcare, he likes to say), he credits his time in the ED for helping him learn “thirty seconds to meaningful rapport,” and an appreciation for “making decisions that count when they count.”  His core experience as a classically-trained physician brings with it a respect for the highly-skilled, highly-committed people so necessary to successful healthcare organizations.  He has cross-pollinated the physician’s respect for patients and colleagues with the ability to develop processes and systems that amplify the efforts of committed teams and allow them to create organizations of value and integrity.

Larry brings to HPS experience as both a department chair and senior physician executive at Billings Clinic, a 2900-employee, 200-MD multi-specialty medical foundation, where he developed and implemented physician leadership strategy, created recruitment/retention efforts for physicians, designed compensation and quality processes, and handled capacity management issues.  Larry contributes unique skill in gathering diverse and often conflicting parties back to the common goal and task of  “high-performance team” through his gift at the art of listening and generative conversation.

Larry earned his BA in English Writing from Carroll College (MT) and graduated from the Stanford University School of medicine in 1992.  He completed his training in emergency medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN, in 1995.  He continues his learning with high-performance teams at the hands of his wife and four children, Jack, Pete, Wes, and Quentin and his experiences as a coach of little leaguers.  As the co-founder for Itancan Rounpen, he facilitates team performance and leadership skills through interactive seminars featuring teammates that you can’t drag around---horses.  He credits a particular black horse for daily lessons learned about himself, doctors, healthcare, and the value of seeing things anew.    He and his family live on Cove Canyon Grasslands, a 3000-acre family-owned LLC dedicated to restoration of indigenous biodiversity, protection of open space, and engagement of human communities around sustainable ways of living.
